Statement In Response to the Recommendations of the
Auto Parts Advisory Committee on a Post 2000 U.S.-Japan Auto Agreement
by AIAM President and CEO Tim MacCarthy June 22, 2000
“The recommendations of the Auto Parts Advisory Committee (APAC) are as old and stale as unwrapped bread. The idea of mandatory trade deficit reduction targets is both dangerous and foolhardy, and has been denounced by economists and policymakers for years. APAC member companies know how much the forces of globalization and consolidation have changed the world. They also know that focusing on product and quality issues will create more business than heated rhetoric ever will. In suggesting otherwise, these recommendations miss the mark.”
